Hi Geoff, As far as I know and ELT is required in the USA. However, I use a SpiderTrack which reports my position every second. If it were to fail due to a crash one should be able to find the plane as you can only go so far in a second. At least a plane flying under light sport rules. :-)
Off topic a little but I believe the failure rate i accident situations of built in ELTs is very high. While I am not sure if you are required by law to fit one, a and held/personal unit is a better choice, as is a SPOT tracker for backup.
The regulations were changed to allow PLB's to substitute for a built in unit after Two young guys crashed their Cessna in Tiger country close to Sydney, Australia. Both survived the accident with minor injuries but neither could walk out, Their built in ELT failed in the crash and they died at the scene some days later before they were found.
Thanks David. I will certainly consider these locations. However, I thought ELT should be as near the rear as possible to improve chance of survival as its only purpose is to meet requirements and transmit after a crash. Also not sure cable is long enough to go behind the access door. I think in the forum someone had responded in front of hatch for ADHARS.
Joe,
I put my remote ADHARS unit in the tailcone right behind the lower access door. I put my ELT on the baggage deck right behind the passenger seat. Both have worked fine for me.
