On Saturday (2 May 2009) evening Bill from Techiman, a school headmaster, and I flew down to look at the Dare to Dream football stadium and the Volta Prairie rice plantation and their new runways between Aveyime and Battor along the river Volta in Ghana, West Africa. We took enough fuel for a diversion to Accra International Airport - because the weather looked a little unpredictable - however...after taking the shots we wanted we turned the plane and saw this....

We flew back under the anvil of the cumulonimbus and enjoyed some incredibly calm and cool air, landing at Kpong airfield just as the system dissipated... Kpong field lies around 25km ahead between the mountain on the left and the lake in the middle rear of the photo!!!

NB this is not to be recommended - Tropical weather is hard to read and it was only on the basis of at least 6 confirming observations that it would probably not mature any further and was unlikely to cross our path - plus 15 years of experience of flying in this area - that we continued under the anvil. Remember we still had a clear line of flight, enough fuel and daylight to deviate to the international airport and were in communication with approach listening to the airliners all deviating around this monster!!!
