I believe there is one in Southern Colorado... I have not seen him around in years though.

Do not know if it has been done before, but wondering why somone would try?  Even if you could install it (CG may be way off, nose gear may not support the weight) what would you accomplish?  801s already have great field performance and by adding more power and a considerable weight increase of the six cylinder, you would probably not accomplish very much.  Also the aircrafts cruise speed is limited by it's high drag design, so you will not see much improvement in speed, just an increase in climb.  There is an easy way to increase the 801s climb and field performance with out going to a six cylinder, the easiest way would be to install a IO-360 200 HP engine, these are common engines found in Piper Arrows, Beech Sierras, Mooney M20 series and many more.  You can also go for one of the hot rod engines available from Superior Air Parts such as the new 230 HP XP-408.  There are also stroker crankshafts available for O-360s to take them to 380 cubic inches.
