This is about Roger and Sam, but not "Sam the airplane"

This is Sam with Roger.  Sam is the builder of a Viking powered CH-750 in Anchorage Alaska.  Together with his Dad, he is constructing this great airplane.  Sam is a pilot and ground instructor, outside of building his aircraft.

Cruzer Useful load with Viking 130?

Posted by Marc Webster on June 7, 2017 at 2:33pm

Hello All,

I have had a few flights in a rotax powered CH750 and was really impressed.  However the Cruzer is a bit more practical for my needs.  On Cruzer's with the Viking 130 engine, what sort of weights are Cruzers coming in at?  How much is left in Useful load if I register for the higher gross weight option?  With the added weight on the nose of the heavier Viking engine, are there CG issues if both pilots are heavy?  I am 230lbs and my dad is 240lbs.  Wife much lighter...:)  I do like the added speed range of the Viking, but at my likely high Gross it may not be as feasible unless its in smooth air.

Best regards,

Marc Webster

  • Since the Rotax provide a 100 - 110 mph CruZer, it is not really a choice for this airplane.
The Viking is not heavier than the rest of them.
    • So is it a misconception that the Viking adds more weight on the nose than the Rotax 912? My concerns are both myself and dad are tall and heavy and that any added nose weight would put me in a nose heavy CG location as well as take away from useful load. I want to be able to carry a good amount of camping or rock climbing gear which is in itself also heavy.

    • No, the Rotax is the lightest engine. It is also the one lacking power for a CruZer AND the one that will get you into aft CG trouble easy.

You say you and your passenger are heavy.
Well, occupants sit AFT of CG in the CruZer. A heavier engine is good

You say you would like to carry a lot of weight.
Well, you will need real power to carry this weight.

You say you would like to put in some camping gear.
Well, this is all way aft of CG. Better have some weight up front to compensate

You mention going places, you will need fuel.
Well, fuel is aft of CG. Better have something compensating for all this aft weight.

You need power and weight up front to do what you want to use the airplane for.

It is nice to see you doing your homework.  In the end - There is no substitute for HP

Flew my CH-601 aircraft equipped Viking 130 engine turning a Whirlwind 3 bladed prop from Ozark, MO to Heber Springs, AR on 6 June 2017. Flew down to play a round of golf with a couple of buddies. There are the status from the two flights.
Whirlwind prop set at 23 degrees.
Both fuel tanks full to the brim.
Baggage was my golf bag and clubs (extra balls to replace the ones that I will loose in the woods and water)
18MO to KHBZ total time 1:11 , flight time 1:02 at 5,000 rpm at cruise. Average ground speed of 128 mph.
KHBZ to 18MO total time 1:17, flight time 1:07 at 5,000 rpm at cruise. Average ground speed of 115 mph.
Refueled 7 3/4 gallons in left tank, 4 gallons in right tank. Left fuel pump produces 2 psi over the right fuel pump.
This gave a fuel burn of 91 octane (car gas) of 5.4 gallons/hour.
Note flight data was from ForeFlight program on my mini-iPad
