Just got the first review on a flying "Steel Bungee"
"Yesterday I flew Rick's 750 with the new spring and what an amazing difference!"
Mike
We now have a bunch of hours on our own "Steel Bungee" and also have the V-shaped nylon block milled flat. I have tried to introduce rudder flutter to see if I could loose the rudder at VNE and all other speeds but it is just fine.
The suspension is now actually moving up and down, rather than mostly being locked into the top position so a little WD-40 was used to keep everything sliding quietly.
The suspension is great, the rudder is free and we are very happy about everything related to the workings. i will still add a small hydraulic damper to the system to introduce a little calibrated and adjustable drag on the rudder system

The 750 straps are 2.3" longer as far as the sheet-metal strap and 3" longer as far as the rods.
Yes, we can exchange them if you need them longer
Thank you

Hi Jan,
Just a quick update on my installation of the Viking Steel Bungee. First, I would like to say that the quality of the parts I received is excellent. I have one comment concerning the lower bearing part (aluminum). It fits very snug inside the nosegear post and is really hard to slide in if the post is used/old. Maybe a little play between the bearing and the post would help with this. Second, altough I ordered the Steel bungee for the CH701, the side straps are TOO SHORT for my CH701sp. I checked my plans (edition 4 - 06/2001) against a newer set (edtion 5 - 2006) and the bungee pin hole on my plans is set at 95mm from the bottom of the U channel and later plans call for 160mm.
This means that for any CH701 built before 2006 the side straps are 2-5/8 inch TOO SHORT. Either you should provide longer side straps or the builder has to make a new bungee pin hole in the U channel 65 mm higher than the one in his plans. I just wanted to let you know because that caused a lot of headaches while installing my Steel bungee.
Is the other set of side straps in pictures longer than the ones I received ? How much longer ? Could I get a set if they were longer by around 2 inches or more ?
Thanks for your help in this matter.

CH701sp (edition 4)
We have run all kinds of tests using Solidworks cad. We are much happier about real world data from our own install and also feedback from the field.
Roger at Zenith has a steel bungee to test when he has time.
The Steel Bungee is a 100% upgrade to any Zenith. If you can't use the center adjustment rod, then don't. It is not major part of the design.
To Jan Eggenfellner,
Is Viking working on any mod to make the steel bungee work 100% with the Rotax engine mount ? If you are, could you please post the status ?
Thanks,
Jim
Thomas, Could you please list some of the tests your EAA Technical Counselor is interested in ???
Also have you heard of any pro/con comments from Zenith on the use of the steel bungee ??
I was ready to order the steel bungee before Joe Harrington reported that, "If you are using a Rotax engine mount, the pre-load release rod will not be useable." Since I have the Rotax, I'll wait and see if they come up with a fix before ordering one.
Thanks, Jim
