Time goes by. We all get huge from cow hormones and draft beer, yet want to get airborne. Zenith Aircraft, predicted the epidemic. The Super Duty was born and we can all fly again. |
To those that don't get the point of the new airplane, here it is :) Yes, it is big, yes it is heavier and yes it will use a lot of gas to go nowhere. Sounds all AMERICAN :) Well, there is more : The additional wing area, tail force, wheel size and engine power truly makes it handle like the earlier 701, yet with much more power, creature comfort and substance. |

The Viking 170 or 190 will make the Super Duty airplane fun at any airfield and at any altitude. |

The Super Duty is a bigger airplane. Along with that come a larger wing, more lift, far better longitudinal control with the huge horizontal, etc.
Keep in mind that this style airplane needs max power for all of 20 seconds, after that it is all just additional weight to carry a big displacement engine. The airplane will not comfortably go over 100 mph. It's a pickup truck, heavy hauler, sightseeing plane, etc. Not a speedster.
The fun comes from lots of takeoff thrust, quiet cruising, sipping fuel and overall low build cost. The Viking 130 has all of this.
If the airplane had a much larger baggage area, in order to carry several hundred lb of whale blubber, then the 174 or 190 hp Viking turbo would be ideal. Since it does not (and whales can't be hunted right now) I suggest the Viking 130.
Obviously this all changes if your summertime density altitude is 10,000 feet. Then the Viking Turbo is a must.

Do you have any idea what you are expecting for performance on the 750 SD with the Viking 130? I was thinking to go with VG's rather than slats as I want the higher weight capacity, but I don't plan to do any "hard STOL," just better than the C-150 I have now. Thanks
In fact, with the Super Duty you don't HAVE to go with the bigger engine. The 130 has enough thrust to pull the airplane, is lighter and cheaper, etc.
