I have a 601hds and I was wondering if there are major differences in wing structure between it and an xl model. I hope I will not have to deal with this type of issues also.I also noticed when I looked on avweb for their article, the feds seem to read these blogs and include opinions of posters in the information they post Thanks Dennis

Dennis,

I'm far from an expert and may well get flamed here for expressing an opinion that's not 100% correct, but there goes:

My understanding is that the wings on the XL attach directly onto the fueslage, not onto wing stubs as in the HD & HDS. I think the wing problems that the XL has had are due to the wing twisting in flight.

In short the 601 HDS does NOT suffer from this problem.

This (Australian) website lists all the ADs for the 601:

This website has some nice mods for the 601 HDS. I particularly recomend the wing root fairings. I haven't built mine yet but everyone I know with lots of aircraft experience says they'll add at least 5 knots to cruis speed & improve low speed handling:

Matronics website has some good forums for Zodiac:

Larry at Macsmachine.com ahs built a HDS from scratch so is something of a guru and has some good info about performance and cooling of the Stratos E81 as he has one. He also sells some nice add-ons. I can vouch for his honesty and prompt delivery of quality products as I've bought some from him.

Good luck!

Greg.

I don't think it is so much that the Feds read these blogs as that there are those that have gotten a lot of their information from these forums and forwarded it along to the NTSB.

If the NTSB were really making decisions based on web posts we would all be walking around in padded suits for safety.

Dennis

Totally different wing construction.
Your spar is 11" high the CH601XL has an 8" high spar.
Your wing outboard sections are interchangable with the HD wing. Both use the same centre section.
The HDS 23 ft tapered wing is the shorter "speed wing" version of the standard square 27 ft HD wing.

Dennis the wing structure of the HD and HDS model are completely different and the present noise is strictly directed at the XL version wing.
