"Who says the 701 isn’t a great glider?"
This video is about Deadstick landing.

I've had a real Deadstick engine out emergency landing. Lost engine at 2500' so I first set up a glide that felt good. 500fpm. Looked around found an area that looked ok & went that way. As I got closer decided on a spot & adjusted glide speed as needed to make the most of landing area. Faster if to high & slower to keep from over shooting. Perfect landing in a field. Only damage was to my pride. If you need to just stall it down then drop nose at about 50 ft; It flys again & land slow. Did this on a bi-annual. Check pilot said you're way to high. Put it on the numbers & he said that's enough & signed me off. Just practice. You can feel this airplane. Love it.
On a related topic, does anyone know if there is a published or universally accepted best glide speed for a standard built 701?
Great video, and instructive. Thanks.
Phillip, the rate of descent, best I can remember was 700-800 fpm.
Michael, I was on a close downwind to the runway at about 1200’ agl when I shut down the engine. Since I built the airplane, I’m also the test pilot. Seems like a good idea to see how the airplane handles a dead stick landing under controlled conditions with my hand on the key ready to restart, rather than in an emergency with a passenger on board. Does that clear up your question?
Definitely need flight data for this "Un-event-ful" landing. Altitude at time of engine off is the key factor. Otherwise this looks like a promotion for the impossible turn. Please clarify asap.
Great video and landing.
I am not game to turn the engine off in my 601HDS, but on practice forced landings, decent rate between 800 and 1000ft min. Glide ratio is not great, maybe 6 to 1
Great video......
Question for Randy, what was your rate of descent at your indicated airspeed of 60?
Great Video. My 801 drops like a rock when I pull the power. I think my 82" prop turning really puts on the breaks. As soon as I pull the power I head straight for the numbers to try to make it. I generally see around a 600' min descent rate at 75 MPH..
