I’m building a 701 with long range tanks. Its the new wing design.  Apparently its the same as the 750 wing because those are the drawings I got. I don’t see what the tank attaches to. There are 2 spacers on the back of the spar, and a small angle called the rear tank support angle that doesn’t appear to support anything, only space the tank away from the rear channel.  The only support seems to be the small angle by the flaperon bracket on the no. 1 rib.  Does the tank just lay on the bottom skin?  That would seem crazy.  Where do the cork strips go?  On the tank?  I’m totally confused

Paul,

I don’t know much about the Zenith outboard aux tanks but yes, the inboard main tanks just sit on the bottom skin, with cork strips as cushioning material. They are braced fore and aft, and on their sides, with the internal wing structure depicted on the drawings to prevent movement, also cushioned with cork strips. The design works and wears well. It takes a bit of wrestling to squeeze them into position. Be sure to install a grounding wire on each tank.  Unless you are absolutely certain you won’t need one, install a metal fuel line to one of the threaded bungs on the top of one tank (an inboard tank is easiest).  Route this fuel line to the wing root area where you can access it after the wing is closed up via a bottom skin access panel. This will be for a fuel return line connection should you need one. It’s a lot of drilling and riveting to add one after the wings are closed up.

Drawing 7V11 depicts the location of the cork strips inside the wing. I also placed cork on the tank bottom.

My 750 STOL just has the tanks (long range upgrade) held in place with the cork strips.  I did need additional cork to get them snug, but the same "Zenith" cork is also available from McMaster Carr if you need extra..
