Let's go flying: Corvair-powered Zenith CH 601

Larry Nelson takes Zenith's Sebastien Heintz flying in his Zenith "Super Zodiac" CH601HDS taildragger (powered by a Corvair) to discuss his airplane and the Zenith workshop class in Yuma, Arizona.
March 1, 2026 Somerton Airport.

The Zenith CH 601 HDS "Super Zodiac" was designed by aeronautical engineer Chris Heintz as an affordable two-seat homebuilt kit airplane. Available with tricycle gear or as a taildragger, the airplane features simple all-metal aluminum construction.
The original CH 601 was powered by a VW engine, and later upgraded to newer engines such as the Rotax 912 series. The Corvair auto conversions remains a popular alternative engine choise.
The CH 650 is the modern updated version of the original CH 601 kit designed.
