I thought I had all the keys for my XL 601 project, but yesterday I found the canopy latch is also lockable, and there are no numbers on the latch. Are keys  available for this latch?

Gil, the key blank for the canopy latch lock on my AMD 601XLi is Ilco 62FS. Based on the appearance of the key, I doubt all of the locks supplied by Zenith use the same key cuts, so you'll probably have to have a locksmith cut the key blank for your lock. There are instructions online that explain how to do it yourself if you want to take the time and make the effort.

From blank keys to working keys without dismanteling the lock (usin...

Hope this helps.

My AMD built 601 has a locking handle, I did find key blanks online, no locksmith or Home Depot's had the blanks. Let's see what you have.
If you don't have a key, you will probably need to take the lock to a locksmith.

Here's the canopy latch handle and lock on my AMD 601 (cropped from a larger photo).

My latch is somewhat different than the one you have pictured. I took the canopy off this morning, it didn't fit right anyway. I'll remove the plastic this afternoon and see if I can find a locksmith locally. Here in the Ozarks, the town are small and far apart. Don't miss the Wisconsin cold weather, but every town had a Lowes or other chain store. Not so here in Missouri. The nearest one is 45 miles one way.

Hi Gil,

another option is buying a new locking handle from Zenith.

$68.00, compare that to what a locksmith will charge you.

My handle is not like Stu's it's more T shaped. But uses the same key that Stu showed, Ilco blanks.

Gil, I checked the parts list for my 601XL kit, and the part number for the locking handle is 65C5-5 Handle (096-336). 096-336 is apparently supplied by Spaenaur in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

It looks like the locking handle is available from Zenith for $20.15. I'd verify before ordering, but that looks like the deal of the century.

I think that's the handle used on the older canopy latching system, Gil. I'm not sure if the 65C5-5 can be used as a direct replacement, but Zenith tech support should be able to tell you.

Here's the illustrated parts page for the current latching mechanism that's on my 601XL showing how the handle interfaces the canopy latching system.

this is my latch

You have the early canopy latch, Gil. The longer handled latch folks are showing in the above posts are for the newer 650 latching system. If you can find a locksmith in your area that is most likely the best bet. Otherwise, buying a replacement latch from Zenith would do the job and provide you with keys.

Many lock barrels have the key code on the barrel. You might want to open up your latch assembly and see if the lock barrel has a key code number on it. Also, many hardware stores carry an assortment of lock barrels and you might be able to bring in your current barrel and find a twin to it in the store. The new lock barrel would come with a set of keys.

Good luck!
