Well, I bought my plane already built. The previous owner(not the builder) was paying $650 for his annual in South Jersey. I live on Long Island, NY and my first annual ended up costing me $1400(because I had to do it through the flight school's shop). Last year my mechanic just did it on his own and charged me $800. I have a new mechanic but it looks like he's willing to do it for the same $800(although I'm having the main wheels and brakes swapped out so he'll get some extra for that). I think the $800 is reasonable. What the flight school charged me was a bit ridiculous for an experimental light-sport.

After the fact, I had a couple of A&P tell me about 600 dollars. Because I could not find anyone wanting to touch mine the A & p that would charged me 2500. Because of the past problems with the 601 no body wanted to touch mine in the local area Check with Buzz @ Buzz Air, they travel all over the country doing inspections for Zenith Aircraft, and will even ferry the plane for you

In Canada, so different rules apply, but can you not do you inspectio

yourself? Just curious.

In Canada the current owner of the home-built can do the inspection.  It does not have to be the original builder - unlike our American friends south of the border.

If you built the plane, yes you can do your own annual. If you have an SLSA, have it changed to an ELSA and take a 2 day class, you can do your own annuals(at least that's the way I understand it). Sadly you can't take the class and do your own annuals if you have an EAB.
