Is anyone familiar with any FAA requirements pertaining to an engine swap out. In particular completely changing make/model of engines?
I suspect it's more complicated than a engine log entry or creating a new engine log but hopefully not.

As always, the first thing to do would be go to your Operating Limitations that were issued with your airworthiness certificate. That would be considered a major modification and the typical Operating Limitations usually require putting the aircraft back into Phase 1 testing (log entry) - usually for 5 hrs minimum. Also, you're typically required to contact your controlling FSDO to get permission for your proposed flight test area. Note - you're NOT required to obtain permission for the modification itself! Perform and record your testing, log your 5 hrs (or whatever your OL says), then put the aircraft back into Phase 2 (log entry) and you're good to go.
Again, your Operating Limitations are the ultimate authority!

There was a place for engine make/model on the registration form. Will they not require a new or modified registration? .

You've got me there! If it's not addressed in the OL, I would call EAA technical support and they should know. As a last resort, you can call your local FSDO (I hate to get the feds involved unless absolutely necessary!) ;>)

I really was curious as to the answer to your question, so I did a little more research. I found at least one instance where an experimental had a completely different engine installed and all that was required was 5 hrs Phase I with the appropriate log entries - no re-issue of the airworthiness certificate was required. This makes sense, if you think about it ... in the certified aircraft world,there are STC's for engine and prop swaps and these don't require a new airworthiness certificate, either.
I'd still run it by EAA or your FSDO for some reassurance!
Maybe someone on this forum has been there/done that and can chime-in!
