My experience has great with Earl's stainless steel hose and AN fittings. I get them from holley.com in Bowling Green Kentucky. This is where they make them and they are slightly (though still expensive) cheaper. This is WWII technology that anyone can master with no special tools. See the Holley.com website for instruction or see youtube.com.

Just keep in mind that the Earl's stuff is rubber hose and should be replaced every five to ten years. If you buy fresh Earl's hose you can re-use the end fittings from the old hoses. You are correct that the Earl's stuff is excellent and far more affordable than official certified stuff even if it's expensive compared to plain vanilla automotive hose.
Earl's also has PTFE hose. ANplumbing.com carries it, and under description of hose it says, "Nobody Beats Earl's in PTFE".

Earl's does make rubber hose, but, as Jim pointed out, Earl's also makes PTFE-lined hose, which is considered "permanent" and not life-limited. It is compatible with any fuel including nitro-methane (about the most corrosive and reactive fuel on the planet!) and this specific brand of hose is very popular with the top-fuel dragster crowd!
6+ years ago, I used the Earl's "Speed Flex" PTFE hose in my STOL 750. It is available from Holley.com and ANPlumbing.com and many other dealers. I order from ANPlumbing since I can call if I have a question and the guy I talk to actually fills and ships the order. Just be sure to use the same Earl's brand "Speed Seal" AN hose ends with the Speed Flex hose. I have never had an issue with leaks and even though I have 9 fitting couplings within the cabin, I have never so much as ever smelled a hint of a whiff of gas fumes! :>)
Tip: When buying PTFE hose, also be sure it has a carbon-impregnated PTFE lining, making it conductive. Cheapo Chinese Ebay hose may not be carbon impregnated, setting up the potential for static build-up and sparking, which is not a good thing around gas fumes! Yikes! You can tell if the lining is conductive or not - the cheap stuff will be white and the conductive linings will be gray or black from the carbon.
