On the standard ignition modules I connected the shield side of my magneto wire to ground and the spade to the mag switch.  In operation, the switch would ground the wire from the spade when off, open when operating.

I have yet to run this engine but in doing some preliminary checks, find that when I use a continuity tester on the spade that the mag switch connects to, I get continuity to ground, even when nothing else is attached to it.

That doesn't seem right to me so I assume I am missing something here.  Hopefully one of you can enlighten me.

Continuity to ground is not the same as shorting that point to ground. Measure the spade lug to ground using a VOM and its probably not at ground potential. Someone with a Jabiru could tell you what the resistance reading should be. I'm sorry, but I don't have a Jabiru. I wouldn't worry about it until you test run your engine. If the switches don't kill the engine, just turn off fuel flow until engine stops. Then troubleshoot any problem.

Tim,

Jim pretty much nailed it on the head.  I found the exact same issue and called Pete at JabiruUSA about it.  He said pretty much the same thing.  As long as your connections through the switch and out to ground are sound, it will work and turn off your engine.

Good luck,

Dave

Thanks guys!  I got a good explanation from a fellow on the Matronics site so I am content that the wiring is correct.

Dave, I'm sure you're going to Oshkosh as am I.... this will be my 40th consecutive convention :-)  The monday after Oshkosh I go in for a total replacement of my right hip.  If it were not for the hip acting up I'd be flying by now.  I have about two days worth of work at home and the XL will be ready to truck to the airport and assemble.   You'd think after all these years I'd catch a break  :-)

Tim

TIm,

I plan to be at Oshkosh Sunday to Sunday as usual.  I have signed up to work the Zenith Give Flight booth from noon to 5 on Monday and may pick up a shift later in the week if they need more help.  Drop me a note when you hit your campsite and I will try to stop by.  Sorry to hear about the hip.  Hopefully you will be back to doing jumping jacks in no time :)  This will be my 37th Oshkosh and 25th straight.  I feel like a rookie compared to you!

See you there,

Dave

16 should be fine. It's just a ground I don't believe it sees much current.
