Just a "FWIW!"

The GRT EIS is a popular engine monitoring system in experimentals - especially for those who don't have engine monitoring integrated into their EFIS or otherwise have analog flight instruments. I was at the GRT booth at AirVenture and was chatting with Greg Toman, the owner of GRT. Although the EIS is a great engine monitor, I mentioned to him that the display looks a little dated what with the small, black-on-green screen and very limited graphical display (actually, just CHT's and EGT's and again, no color/limits).

Greg acknowledged that and said "in the coming year" to watch for a new, color graphical display that I understood to be compatible with existing EIS installations. I would expect this would also mean that the EIS unit itself could then be remotely mounted. He also mentioned that it likely would include or have available an attitude indicatior capability. No mention of cost, projected availability, dimensions, etc.

Just another wrinkle on planning or updating a panel, especially if you either already have an EIS or plan to go analog otherwise and don't have an EFIS with engine management capability.

One of the reasons I went with the MGL Mini was the GREAT display.  I liked the features on the GRT but that display just looked crappy IMHO!  The MGS was only a bit more expensive because it uses a seperate RDAC but if GRT ups their display they will most likely improve their selling points, as long as the price doesn't go up too much...

I put the cart before the horse and bought the GRT EIS the same day I made the deal on my engine, as it was highly recommended by Pete at Jab USA. (I got one of those "AirVenture Special" deals on the EIS from GRT - Pete's a dealer and said I paid GRT less than he could possibly sell it to me for!) I had it fully installed and functional before I really got serious about the EFIS (I "thought" I was going round gauges up til then!) At that time, GRT's basic EFIS cost at least twice what MGL's Xtreme does, so because of that and an experienced builder's/friend's recommendation, I went with the MGL EFIS for flight instrumentation. Both the GRT and MGL units work great! I recently considered a larger (and now much cheaper!) GRT EFIS (they now have internal AHRS and compass at a great price!), but it doesn't support my remotely mounted Sandia 165-R transponder. So, an updated EIS display will be high on my wish-list, if it fits my panel!

It get's complicated quickly, doesn't it!

Yep.  I love my Dynon/MGL combo setup, but sometime I wonder if I caused myself more trouble than I should have by not using good old steam gauges!  It's not like I will be using my toy for much more than zipping out to a close, but not too close lake area and some light cross-country so even my moderate setup is obvious overkill.  When you think about it, we are putting stuff in our 800lb toys that airline pilots could only dream about less than 20 years ago!!! :0
