I am working to line up seat cushions for my Zodiac 650B that use Confor or memory foam. The extra comfort of the Confor foam is worth the extra weight to me. Can anybody recommend a manufacturer that has patterns for the Zodiac and will use this optional foam material?

I believe they have patterns for the foam, but don't know if they do all of the upholstery work.

Hi Larry
Aircraft Spruce sells Oregon Aero cushions for the 701 and 601, you have to cover them though. OA makes quality stuff, the military uses their products. BTW I grew up a couple miles from Smith Field, used to ride my bike to the field and hangar rat until the adults shooed me off. That's where I got the aviation bug that's still with me today.

I purchased my Confor foam from Seatfoam.com a few years ago.  They have "kits" for the various Zenith models, but these are just rectangular pieces of the stock material sized appropriately for the various seats - in my case (STOL 750) there were 3 graduated densities for the seat base and 2 densities for the seat back.  You still have to glue and laminate the foam and carve and shape it to your final configuration.  Unless this is a new service, I don't think they do anything beyond sell the raw material.

I found a local upholsterer who did a lot of custom auto and boat work and he did a great job.  I highly recommend this route as it is very convenient to "trial sit" the foam in the seat before it is covered.  This results in a truly custom fit and comfort!

Someone on this forum recently said that Oregon Aero will ship uncovered cushions to you for the "trial sit" before they cover them, but I like the idea of getting fitted in the upholsterer's shop so they can make small adjustments or additions on-the-spot.

Hi Russell, Jim, Amelia and John,

Thanks so much for the great info! I had talked to the couple in Crete, NE and I didn't remember this seatfoam.com web site. I will also check out the Oregon Aero supplies.

John, you make a great point of working with a local upholstery shop and doing a trial sit before the job is done.I will locate a local shop that I can work with and use the Confor foam. I will be at the 25 th anniversary hangar days on 9/22-23 and will be getting a lot of interior ideas from the group. Thanks again! Best Regards, Larry Zepp Zodiac 650B  N22LZ

I bought comfor foam squares form the aviation supply houses, glued them together and cut to size.  Then had a local automotive upholsterer cover them in marine vinyl colors they had in stock.  It was actually quite easy and I did not have to choose pre-set thickness or colors.

I'm interested in how you did your seats. I bought a 601 project dated 2007 the best I can tell, and the foam is dry and crumbly.  I need to replace the foam and recover. How did you cut and shape your foam and what types of foam did you use?

Gil

Hi Gil,  See the above notes on sources of the foam. I am still planning for the seats, so that is all of the advice I can offer. I think I will try to find a custom auto interior shop because I don't have a sewing machine for this material or the experience to get a good result the first time!  Best Regards,

Hi Dave, Thanks for your info and great pictures - that looks like a very nice result!  Larry Zepp
