Hi

We are finally at the point to resume the phase one testing (previous owner had 31 hours in).  Obviously we want to do our own testing.   The CH 701 we purchased did not have the slats on it but did have the VG's on the wing and stabilizer.   I have basic POH V-speeds from other 701 owners with the "stock" set up.   In the current configuration that we have (no slats with VG's), what should we expect to see in changes for stall speeds, take-off speeds etc.   I know this varies on a lot of different issues (engine, gross weight) but what should I expect based on just the removal of the slats and installation of VG's?

Thanks

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Lots of info on that subject under discussion  : "Installing Hall Brothers Vortex Generator Kit (WING VGs) to the CH701 wing" on my page.

Basically, I can say that the nosewheel comes off/on at 38 mph indicated. I can pull the nosewheel off as soon as the speedo gets to 38mph which is almost the same as before with the Slats. The takeoff run seems to run the same lenght but the speed seemed to build faster. The 701 will takeoff comfortably at 48mph; lots of control.

I got 750 fpm at 54mph and could hold this forever.

Slow flight/ Stalls : The 701 with Slats won't stall; it will mush nose high and descend at 1000fpm under control. With the VGs, you can still slow flight this thing and it will sort of stall right ahead but as soon as the nose comes down you're flying again... Lateral control stayed good at all times...My 701 is on the nose heavy side, when the speed bleeds it wants to nosedown and start flying again.

Flying : With the Slats, I usually did 550-600fpm at 52mph (full gaz, pilot) ..., I am now doing 600fpm at 60mph. This is better ! Full throttle, easily doing 85mph and keeps going where before 85mph would be pushing it !

I can pull back on the power 5300rpm(MAX), 4900rpm, 4500rpm, 4200rpm and I'm still doing 70mph.

So, nosewheel off (38mph), takeoff (48mph), TopSpeed (90mph), cruise 70% (80+mph), pattern (60-65mph), landing (56mph) for a smooth touchdown and no hassle control.

For turns, coordinate AILERON - RUDDER. For landings, keep your speed UP (60mph) for the first few hours (15-20hr) and DONT use the FLAPS - you dont need them.

You'll just LOVE THIS. GUARANTEED !

Regards,

Norm
