The beanie mod is replacing the flat top plexiglass over the cabin with a wing shaped top instead. Check my photos you'll see. I also have a discussion on this modification.
Better airflow over the elevator, better control on landings/takeoff.

Norm
Hi Jim,
I would do the VGs underside elevator mod, then the Beanie mod and the VGs on the main wing PRIOR to the first flight. This way the 701 feels more like any other airplane (for low time pilots) but it is still a VERY STOL airplane in that configuration. Too STOL for most pilots needs.
I did my first flight and tought that it was n easy plane to fly, be careful not to chop power before being almost on the ground; STOL wings bleed speed real fast.
Regards,
Norm
Thanks for your comments. It is a very good engine, lots of power, quiet and economic. Look at RAM Performance engine website, they do EA-81 like nobody else. If I had to do it over, I would buy their engine/conversion and drop it in my CH701.
They also sell parts and can do work on your engine...
Just a tought.
In any event, if you have questions, don't hesitate.
Regards,
Norm
No I didnt, but I moved the battery as far back as I could.
Still balanced pretty good. Remember, any weight you add is behind the CG so no problem with balancing...
Pilot, copilot, luggage all are behind the CG so they all help balance out the engine and stuff...
Regards,
Norm
This is a CH701 behind that EA-81 and associated plumbing.
Flies real nice with plenty of power...

Norm
