I just took a 600NM trip from Anacortes to Sandpoint Idaho and back to demo to a prospective Zenith/Viking customer who got scared by buying/flying a poorly rigged 701 and needed to see what a 750/130 combo flew like. I dropped by and took him for a flight and Roger sent me a nice t-shirt as thanks! 103 KTAS at 13K density altitude at 5.1 GPHYou have to really trust an engine to go that far over the mountains!Jonathan…See More

Review of the New Viking Gearbox at 15 hours

At about 45 hours I installed the upgraded gearbox in my Viking 130 powered Zenith 750 Cruzer. Jan had told me that the new gearbox would run cooler and had a new bearing to handle the turbo power levels, and since I was contemplating getting a constant speed prop, I thought the extra headroom would be worth the investment since constant speed props run higher RPMS.I have about 15 hours on the new gearbox and I have to tell you I am surprised how cool in runs, how much cleaner the new setup is…See More

Making of a dual purpose Cruzer. STOL and Speed in one aircraft (but not at the same time)

While I built a Cruzer for speed, if Fast was all I was looking for a Sling TSI would have made a better build. I also wanted a part-time bush plane for the times I want to explore the Northwest off the beaten path. I also wanted to be able to change over quickly so that when I needed to go on a long cross country the change over time could be amortized in time and fuel cost savings for the trip. I am hoping for about a one hour change over to move from one configuration to the other. So how do…See More

Great to meet everyone at the Zenith Homecoming

Although 1,000 miles of bad weather prevented me from bringing my Cruzer this year I was really happy that I got a last minute deal on orbits and was able get to the Homecoming an meet many more of you this year. I love that Zenith does this and it really is a great way to reinforce the community and connect people at a deeper level.See More

How often do you have to add oil?

As on any plane I check the oil before each flight and make sure it is in range, when it gets near the bottom end of the range add enough to bring it near the top. The question is how many hour are you expected to go between having to add a quart? In cars I often never have to between oil changes, but what do folks see in real-world use of the car engine in airplane use?I am sure how much you push it will influence it. Has anyone kept track or noticed? If I go on a long cross country, how much…See More

Ducting on my Viking 130

While I was not experiencing overheating early on in my flight testing, we got a really bad run of hot weather in Seattle, and I was getting elevated temperatures after initial takeoff and climb to pattern altitude and was pushing low 220's. Even trying slow lower power climbs it was not possible to reduce th temps to below 218, so I knew I had to deal with modifications to my cooling.I started by replacing the supplied 1/4 by 20 100mm long rods with some longer ones and opening up about 6-7…See More
