601 updates?

Good morning allIt’s getting to be that time of the year. My Annual Condition Inspection is coming due. In the process of researching updates, I went to the ZAC builder’s site. The last update I can find there is “main gear spring attach points” dated 5/18.Obviously that was 5 years ago.Does anyone know of any other more recent updates? What am I missing?See More

Any experienced XL pilots flying out of grass strips?

My wife and I are discussing buying some property. I told her my only stipulation was I needed enough acreage to put in a grass strip for my 601 XL.I know each plane is different based on prop and engine combination, gross weight, pilot skill-but generally speaking, what length grass strip are y’all flying out of, allowing for a margin of error and safety?.I plan to do some research by flying up to a grass strip in Crystal River to get some real numbers but I at least want to get an idea of…See More

Fuel system check during annual

I'm sure everyone else already knows this but I figure I'll confess my ignorance anyways:I just finished my annual and was taxiing to the fuel pump to top off. (I had not replaced the cowl yet.)once I shut down I found a puddle of 100LL under the carb.  Apparently the fuel line from the engine-driven fuel pump to the carb inlet was leaking (well, I'm not sure if it was one of the fittings or the braided stainless covered fuel line) either way, the leak was only evident when the fuel pump was on…See More

Biennial xponder checks with adsb installed

I am almost certain of the answer but I wanted to ask anyways,With a PAPR-confirmed ADSB-out installed in my 601, is the biennial transponder check still required?I have no doubt that if it's installed, it has to be current, but I can't find anything with the feds that specifies this.Anyone have a reference for this?Brad CohenN969BCSee More

ADSB-Out Verification Flight

Hello AllI just installed my UAVionix ADSB-out and passed my PAPR and GAIRS verification flight(s)I'm not sure how many of you have already completed the test but I wanted to offer my unsolicited advice; What I did was to draw up a flight profile outlining all the maneuvers that would ensure a "Pass" the first time around.  All the easily-accessible literature just says to "maneuver for 30 minutes in Class B airspace" but there is actually a bit more to it.According to AC 20-165B the feds…See More

Borescope inspection

Posted on November 1, 2017 at 11:22pm 2 Comments

Ok,

So I'm nearing my third annual condition inspection next month and I'm trying to get all the bits and pieces in place beforehand this time (new air filter, spark plug gaskets, etc) and I've been reading a lot on the value of borescope inspections of the cylinders.

I'm not sure about replacing compression testing entirely, but I did get a good quality Wi-Fi borescope (depstech model wf010 with a 90 degree mirror attachment) from Amazon for $49

I dont know about mtow but it will take the 0-235 no problem and you will get that 115kts every day might even scrape close to the 120 if every thing is going your way

Brad, sounds like you have it sorted out. Just wanted to make sure you were considering things that had never crossed my mind.

Brad, I read your question to Sebastian on increasing the Gross Weight. As the Manufacturer, you are allowed to set all Specifications on an Experimental, this includes stuff like Vh (max continuous). If you want to set your Gross Weight to 1,450, it's up to you. I believe the Upgraded XL will easily handle the load, it gets down to performance.

As for being a Private Pilot and not needing to worry about flying as a Sport Pilot, let me tell you a story. 2 years ago I went from being a Private Pilot to a Sport Pilot in about an hour after a visit to my new Cardiologist. An accidental discovery of an ascending aortic anyuerism not only saved my life, but put an end to Private Pilot for the foreseeable future. I was released to fly as a Sport Pilot by my Cardiologist about a year after the surgery.

If you set the Gross Weight over 1320 and have any number of medical issues, you could lose your Medical and not have an airplane to fly until you resolve the issue with FAA Aeromedical. I am currently pursuing a Special Issuance Medical, 7 months so far. In the interim, I can fly as a Sport Pilot. I used to think Sport Pilot was for old guys in their 60's. Shit happens.
