I was assembling my elevator this evening and when the time came to install the hinge pin, rather then rivet it to the outer tip rib, I riveted it to the inside of the rib.

I figured that in this way, rather then relying on only two rivets to keep it attached to the elevator, you would need to loose the complete tip of the elevator, before the pin ever came loose.

I also like the clean look of the tip rib, without the hinge pin and metal strap.

Elizabeth, I will be using auto body washers ( they have a very small hole, and large outer diameter ) and I won't know how many will be needed until I fit the two parts together. If done properly ( I will do my best ) there should not be any contact between the hinge plate, and the tip rib.

I made a small doubler and riveted it to the end of the hinge plate. It gives me twice the bearing surface that will ride on the hinge pin, and should keep the hole from ever becoming elongated. It also serve to act as a re-inforcement for a very critical part of the control surface. As for the weight penality, it's next to nothing, and I think it look's cool.

We have thought about this - and it really does look nice, but what about the potential wear now that the steel part is not there to protect accidental contact with the stab? How many washers are you putting between the stap and the hingeplate? perhaps a bigger penny type would be a good idea?

How come the two solid rivets on the hinge plate?
