DEEP SNOW..."Plan B"
When I built the wheel penetration skis for my CH750 I saved the wheel cut outs of aluminum & UHMW plastic. The "Plan B" was to simply deflate the tire and side these inserts in place, holding them installed by re-inflating the tire. There is about a 40% drag / performance for wheel penetration skis vs. straight skis. Snow here is over your knees...approaching waist (CH750 belly skin) deep in many drifts. I deflated the tires and tried to slip the inserts in place..."No Go" the heavy tire simply won't compress enough at -15C temps. Plan C will be removing the weight of the tires completely and bolting the inserts in place to convert to straight skis. I suppose I could just take the UHMW plastic bottom skin off and bolt in a new one without the wheel hole cut out...hmm??? Plan D?

I'm heading for Arizona in a week... Phoenix area from Feb. 11th to Feb. 23rd. I'm hoping to meet a few of the Zenith builders in the Glendale airport area, check out their projects, hangar fly... go for lunch? I have the local snowmobile club bringing in the trail groomer to tame some of the snow drifts around the airport. :>)

Bob, how about plan L for Logical Solution? Ie ... Shift to warmer places! The sound of all that snow and low temperatures takes me back to the two winters I spent in central Alberta many years ago....I shifted back to New Zealand having experienced enough snow etc for my lifetime. Still, your flying appears to be an engaging hobby for you - building skis for winter and floats for summer. What will be your next project? Your blogs and regular comments are always interesting. Keep up the good work!
