No, no VG's installed on first flight - it flies fine without them and they are not mandatory.
John, on that flight, did you already have vortex generators on your wings ???
I am thinking of removing my slats too. Will it be mandatory to use VGs ???

Yes, the first flight was without slats - they were still in the paint shop and the DAR was very familiar with Zenith 750's and said it would be no problem to go ahead and fly without slats. (Also, I had several hours recent experience flying a 750 both with and without slats.) There are no trim changes without slats and landings are easier, too, so it actually made the first flight very easy.
