Our club held a short field take off competition and I won. 29 meters from stop over the string at 1 meter height. Here is my 30 meter attempt where I hit the grass with the rudder with a rather abrupt elevator input. No harm done. Soft grass.

Jock, Yes it is quite enough for me and I am sure you can buy this engine for less than new today because there are many out there that want more power and are upgrading to 100 hp. E-bay and Barnstormers in the USA. About the icebergs. We have to go to Greenland to see those floating around.
Our agriculture is very simular to yours, with sheep and cows:-)

Johann,

Thanks for your quick response. I didn't pick your photo as having been taken in Iceland - my vision of Iceland is focussed around all those big beautiful icebergs that float by that I want to see some time. From the New Zealand point of view, that green grass looks good enough to farm a few sheep or cows!!

I'm fitting the same motor in mine at the moment. Salespeople have tried to sell me the 100hp ULS model, but wiser pilots urge me otherwise. Seems to me that unless you are going to operate from high altitude strips or drag a pair of floats, then a take off like the one in your photo with 80hp is more than sufficient!

Hello Jock. I am using the Rotax 912 ul 80 hp engine. In our cool climate up here in Iceland, it is more than enough for my plane.

Wow - very impressive! Maybe I should put a small block under the tail of my yet to be completed 701? What motor do you have?

Hello German.

Oh, yes. this is what building and flying a Zenith 701 is all about. This plane is remarkable and so easy to fly. I know this is streatching it a little, but it makes it more interesting. I cant think of any other sport that could come close to this one.
