Rebecca, I used one of those machines with a cutting disk. I don't know how they are called in English, but they are pretty common and cheap. They are used to cut metal and you can find one for 20-30 dollars, I bet.
With it I first made a cut staying away from the line, and then I used the disk with its side, as a sort of sander. It's not designed for this, but it works ;-)
