I thought it was time to give an update on my corvair 601XL. The airplane has 72 hrs on it now...keep in mind that the first flight was just in the middle of june. Since the moment we mounted the engine I have only adjusted the timing, changed the oil and pulled the plugs for inspection. Haven't had to turn a single bolt or screw on the fwf. It has turnkey reliability. I flew from FL to PIT then onto oshkosh and back to PIT. I have carried a few passengers including my father.

I just wanted to give an update on my corvair powered 601xl. I now have 54 hrs on my airplane. We haven't turned a wrench on the engine except for oil changes since the first flight. Totally smooth and hasn't skipped a single beat.

I flew from south of Jacksonville, FL to Finleyville, PA (approx 20 nm SE of Pittsburgh, PA) nonstop today. Flight time was 5:58. Distance is 626 NM. Nice long flight.

Now I am getting ready to fly to oshkosh this weekend...see you there in the… Continue

As posted before it has a standard William Wynne corvair engine w/ a Dan Weseman 5th bearing, Dynon efis/ems, and Garmin avionics stack. Updates to follow

Corvair powered 601xl receives airworthiness certificate

My Fly-Corvair powered 601XL was deemed airworthy by the FAA today. After almost 4 and a half years of on and off building my airplane is ready to fly.

I own and built this plane w/ Vincent Olson. We are both ATP's and CFI's and fly for the airlines. Flight testing will commence asap. We're looking forward to quickly flying off the 40 hours and going on a midwest tour to include St.Louis, Chicago, Indianappolis and KY before the… Continue

Louis,
Would it be possible for you to take a picture of your cooler location and the rear of your baffle set up? William built my engine with a rear alternator the same as yours and I was interested in how you set it up.
Thanks

Louis,

Your plane looks great! What brand and color of paint did you use? I've polished my 650 and I'm on the lookout for a good contrast color.

Louis,

Did you have to treat the metal before you used the self etching primer??

I scoth brighted my rudder and clean it good then sprayed it with zinc chromate. I hope it will hold up after the top coat.

Thanks,

Jeff Webb
