Posted on January 7, 2009 at 1:47pm 1 Comment

I'm Mike van Rensburg from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Received the 650 plans yesterday and very eager to start. I have done a lot of research and planning. Now that I've received the plans & photo manuals even more studying will take place!!!!

Will start to work on the rudder very soon. Was very fortunate to attend a rudder workshop early in December when Philip Cronje of Bundu Aviation (Zenith dealer in South Africa) came to PE to deliver Michael Hübsch's 801… Continue

MIke, I can only take credit for modifying an existing solution, and sharing. Not that long ago I had never done fiberglass and there was a limited amount of information available. My skills have improved significantly with practice, practice, practice.

I thought about plans building originally, but I decided it was better to cheat just a bit and start with a kit. Good luck with your project.

I'll send more photos before too long. 444PZ has been flying since 1995; I just learned about Zenith Aero or I would have been on the site earlier. I flew to Oshkosh in 2001 from Southern Calif.; my wife and I will go again at the end of July.

Hi Mike:
I just read your post to my site. I fabricated the pushrods locally. Unfortunately, I used 1 1/4" thick wall aluminum tube. Waaaay too heavy. 5/8 or 3/4 would have been fine. They (pushrods) are rock solid and a joy to fly with. Van's RVs all have pushrods. Maybe you can source a pair thru them.

Hi Mike
That would be really good - Do you stay overnight in Gun-teng (intentially spelt)? When will you be up here again? My offices are in Sandton Eastgate Ext near the intersection of Bowling and Marboro Drive. If I could get a look at specific pages I believe it would make my mind to pop for the upgrade or not. If you are here for the evening of 12th March I would like to take you to the Woods auditorium - 2 ex WW2 pilots as guest speakers - you guys miss a lot being at that end of the Country! Let me know. - Ivor

Hi Mike
Seems the 650 is a sexier airee. I wold really like to know about the changes to the wing incidence vs 601XL and the rear spar attachment. Another XL went down yesterday in Utah and the speculation about anothe rear spar failure has me a bit spooked! The Zenair offer to upgrade to the 650 plans is beginning to look like a maybe nessecary upgrade. Good luck with your build. Ivor
