CH 701 start date 5-13-13 (Sheet metal brake)

Well, it's as good a time as any to start. The plans are still a blur but I should be able to get through the rudder. I'm scratch building but I can see where buying parts is a real advantage so I'm sure I'll be buying parts. Zenith prices are pretty cheap, all things considered.

Building the sheet metal brake

Anyhow, I need to build a brake. I'm a self employed plumber so I made some time today and drove to the steel supplier and bought some angle iron. According to the famous "Dave's sheet metal brake" that people use he used 3" x 1/4" angle iron. I decided to buy 2" instead. It seemed pretty darn beefy so I went with it.

My first expense

The price for 3 pieces 8 foot long, including tax, was $84.24. My service truck gets 5 MPG so I figured it cost me $20. So not including the cost of the new blueprints from Zenith I'm into this for $104.24.

Let the fun begin!

Yeah, I read about your wood brake and I really liked it. It looked like a pretty sweet set-up Ron, I almost built yours but I needed to get some threaded rod so at the last minute I decided to get the steel.

Mike you don't need steel... you are dealing with soft aluminum!  Built mine out of wood... works great!
