The FAA has released the Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for LSA aircraft. Among other things, an aircraft’s weight limit would be based on stall speed. This could allow aircraft weighing as much as 3,000 pounds to be classified as LSA. The proposal would also expand the types and usage of LSA aircraft, allowing some aerial work. Sport pilots could operate up to four seat aircraft, but would still only be allowed one passenger.
You can view the NPRM at www.federalregister.gov/d/2023-14425.

Per the plans the design weight of CH750 STOL edition 3 is 1440 pounds or 120 pounds over the current light sport limit of 1320. I believe the edition 1 and edition 2 plans are designed to 1320 max. There are subtle difference in the design to justify the increase in max gross weight. I certified my 808 pound empty weight CH750 at 1320 pounds to keep it light sport legal in case I did not want to keep getting a medical. If this all goes through I will probably change mine up to 1440, but even without the additional certified weight it is comforting to have that margin designed in.
The design gross weight limit of the 750 STOL is higher than 1.320 (1,500 if I recall), but I don't see it on the web site anymore. Will Zenith publish new allowable gross weight limits for their kits if and when the new rule is implemented?
That's the way I read it too, but section C.3 seems to indicate experimental aircraft could be used for training, as long as they aren't operated commercially for that purpose. Presumably, that means they'd still serve that purpose under the current policy.
And make sure you don't exceed 250 knots in that 750 SD or 801.
If I am understanding this correctly it would allow pilots flying with just a drivers license "medical" to fly the 801 or the 750 Super Duty as long as there was no more than 2 seats filled. It would not allow anyone to use an Experimental certified aircraft for commercial purposes. Does this match with what others have read from this?
