Flying with my iPhone - Part 2 (InstaMapper)

I went flying in the STOL CH 750 yesterday (to test a new Sensenich wood prop) and used InstaMapper to track my position online in real time. That means that anyone (with access to my free InstaMapper account) can view my position in real time from the internet: Neat!

To start "broadcasting" my position, all I do is start "GPS Tracker" on my iPhone, as shown above. (GPS Tracker is the free iPhone application for InstaMapper). It then sends the GPS info (via phone) at regular intervals (you can set the time between "markers" as well as the GPS accuracy). That's it! From the web you can then access the position (on Google Maps, as shown below). It also posts the last (current) speed, altitude and heading!

On my next cross country trip, I'll try to remember to post the link to allow you to track my progress! I haven't had the best luck with enroute cell phone reception on cross country trips in the past - maybe I need to follow roads more...
InstaMapper bills itself as "a free service that allows you to track a person or vehicle online in real time using a GPS-enabled cell phone."

By the way, here's a photo of the Dynon panel, showing good speed with the simple wood Sensenich prop (climb was also very impressive, but it was a cold day...).

Happy New Year!

Now that looks easy to do and very useful.

If you want to increase your cell phone’s effectiveness in the airplane (for voice or data) you can use this antenna:

I have one on the bottom my airplane way in the back way from the other antennas. You will need an appropriate adapter for your specific phone. Some phones don’t have an external antenna jack. Often they are hidden under a rubber plug.

I look forward to following your flight on-line.
