First time poster, had a long road to airworthiness. Just wanted to let those of you with corvair engines know that the engine is very very hearty. This picture is from the first flight after I purchased the aircraft. The 2700 CC engine was overheated to the point where it melted the heads and gaskets. It landed pouring oil and smoking like a chimney. Running way too lean. It landed running though. Even with what is shown, the engine was chugging along. Now I have solved the issue, rebuilt the engine with Bill Clapp, and it's flying like a bird. The engine is a strong one, seemingly built for aviation. Don't put too much stock in William Winn. Follow your instincts.

Did you build the engine or did someone else?
Glad to hear your going again pretty aggravating stuff for sure hope it wasn't a big purchase price.
Does Bill do his own head work or hire it out.
Planning to have a set of spare heads built up for my 3 litre i plan to do what i can but at some point will need machine work and welding. Its not a bad idea to have a spare set ready to go.
Wesman's will build up a set of heads for corvair flight engines and so far for me they have been really good to deal with.
Curious, what EGT and CHT temperatures were you seeing? Looks like a blown head gasket to me. Any Piston photo's to share?
