I got down to 10 in my Cherokee Six over Cape Cod with three notches of flaps.

Loiter time to look for whales.

Read a story by a Cub flyer coming down the coast of Maine who was pushed backward out over the ocean. He needed to skim the surface to get enough headway to get back to land.

There are some wicked winds that blow over the White Mountains to the sea in waves. In the same area in the Six I have had to throttle way back and fly "downhill" to maintain my altitude and not redline.

Interesting times.

This is a common occurrence for those trying to fly across Wyoming!
Thanks for the video - enjoyed it.
Has anyone thought about the stall possibility during this configuration?????

I did this in 1969 as a solo student in a straightback Cessna 150. The wind at the surface was only 15 or so, right down the runway so the instructor sent me out for a solo local practice ride. It did not take long to realize that the winds aloft were really howling even though it was smooth as glass. I went up to 4,000 feet and flew across the field backwards, very slowly. When I got on the ground the instructor was a bit stern with me about playing around but he also thought it was cool. He went up and did it also. He did not call me inflight to ask what I was up to because that old 150 did not have any radios of any kind. Only the new (1966 model) 150 had a radio but it cost more to rent. There certainly was no GoPro camera to document it or a GPS to give exact groundspeed. Times have changed. Fun video, thanks for making it!

Must have looked odd to folks on the ground.  Did this once in a C150 at about 10,000' and got a very strange feeling of "high anxiety"; like looking over the railing from a very tall building.  Once I did a 180 and got some speed over the ground the feeling went away.  So guess you can have a fear of heights but not a fear of flying.

Thanks for posting, great video.
I flew backwards in a 172 with an instructor along and made him put a note in my log book.
It was a bi annual and the wind on the ground was only about 15, at 3,000 ft it changed directions and was howling. We were in controlled airspace so I asked the instructor if we should call the tower and tell them we are backing in for a landing! No video but great memory.

John,

Great video!  I'd have to refuel to get back home!
