Ed,

 

A black pen and lined paper worked just fine for me.  I think some people spend more time writing their build logs then they do actually building the airplane!!   It does not matter how polished your build log is as long as the inspector feels you built the airplane.

I use a black (sometimes blue!) pen and a notebook, and a spreadsheet on google documents which lets me see the hours worked per kit and the overall total. I only get to build at weekends so I see entering the data during the week as still working on the project :)

Thanks for the help.  I did think about a spreadsheet, but I really wanted to add photos.  I may be out of luck.

I'm only just starting but my current plan is a google doc spreadsheet for the build log and a separate blog site to share images and info on the build. Good luck!

What is a Google Doc spreadsheet?  Any different than Excel?

Google doc spreadsheets are the same as Excel except they are online so you can see them anywhere. You can also set up views that are publicly accessible to others.

If you look at my blog http://www.stol750project.info/ on the right hand side there is a box marked Documents, the two links in there are views into my time and costs spreadsheets.

Note that you can embed photos into a google docs spreadsheet if you want to associate images with tasks.

Thanks so much.  I'm going to try to experiment with that system.  If I can figure out how to add pictures, I'd be in pretty good shape!

Paul,

In your estimation, should I start a blog, that would take some learning, or should I use the Google Spreadsheet?  If the spreadsheet, how do I insert photos?

Ed,

My preference would be for the blog because you can do pretty much whatever you want with it. It is easy to insert pictures, videos etc and you can share or not share with anyone you want. There are many ways to get started but my suggestion would be to get a free account at http://wordpress.com/  It's free, totally managed by them and there are hundreds of gorgeous themes and plugins just sitting there. 

If you want to give it a go let me know and I'm happy to answer any questions but they have good tutorials and it is really very easy.

Thanks again, I am going to take a look at that site.  I am a real "Ludite" and have trouble with anything past the basics.  I always had a tech guy to manage my stuff, and now in retirement, I'm on my own!

Paul,

Here is my site that I tried to start, http://oldsstol750.wordpress.com/   I seem to be stuck and can't find where to change the opening to where it shows an airplane?  I would like to have zenith's in the background.  Any ideas?
