Previous to the ASTM LSA loat test, Zenair completed another test for twisting and maximum aileron loads. This test was done with no upgraded items. Test passed with absolutely no deformation at ultimate. The only reason for extending 6-ZU-1-1 to where its now is for possible bending of the spar caps over 6 g's.

I am discussing your question with the shop specialists and will get back to you on this.
There was a thread on the email list yesterday concerning the center spar. From Sebastien's blog, it appears the center spar was removed, but work reverted to the wings. This led to speculation that modified center spar might need to be mated to the modified wing spars outside the aircraft to confirm fit, etc.

For some of us, this is problematic, since we are working in limited spaces, and have great difficultly having space for a partially disassembled fuselage and wing at the same time. This all leads to the following question: will we need to remove the center spar and test mate it to the wing spars outside the aircraft?

Too much speculation out there :-)
There is absolutely no need to mate the spars off the aircraft. Please do not worry about that. We finalized the drawings of the wings so Zenith wanted to finish the wings, as to confirm the drawings. I hope they are working on the center spar now as these drawings seem to be about finished.
There probably is too much speculation, at least on my part. But at least you know you have our attention! :-)
Is there any information on mass balancing hinge-less ailerons? I don't see how it's possible. If not, will hinges be included in the upgrade kit, or will will these need to be purchased separately?

There is no difference to the installation of the mass balance with or without the piano hinge. The UK LAA did the flight test on the hinge as this is what they had.
Hi Mathieu. I know there has been quite a lot of discussion regarding the UK LAA Aileron Mass balance Mod. Reading the UK LAA mod documentation they state "The aileron mass balances called for by this modification have not been shown to be suitable for use with ‘flexible skin’hinged ailerons".
Does this mean that aditional engineering structural work and flight testing is required to verify the flex skin mass balance design?
I am a bit worried about the flexing skins lack of regidity with the balance weight pivoting forward of the hinge line compared to the solid hinge setup.

I have gone over this with Chris Heintz in detail. He does not believe that by adding the aileron mass balance to the hingeless with have a negative impact.

On page 6-ZU-4, we are recommending that 65W2-5 and 65W2-6 plates be installed. These plates add a lot of rigidity to the ailerons. Additionally, we are adding the 0.040" L angle (6-ZU-1-6) to the top rear side of the rear spar. This significantly stiffens the top skin at trailing edge.

Looking at the new drawings and the vidoes, I'm not clear if there are any shims [which would be 1/4" thick] behind the wing root doubler between the top and bottom spar bars.[the two 1/4" thick bars on either side of the web] Cheers Alan

With the new thicker doubler at 0.125", there is no need to add the 1/4" doubler between the existing 0.040 spar web and the new doubler 6-ZU-1-2.
Hello Mathieu,

There has been some discussion about not having access to the aileron mass balance weights once installed into the wing and the wing closed up. Has any consideration been given to installing an access plate on the bottom wing skin to access the weighted end of the balance bar? Having an access plate would permit the ailerons to be removed. Otherwise the wing skin would have to be removed to remove the aileron.
