Hi everyone. Im scratch building a CH640, I live in Durham region but can travel. If anyone is working on a plane and doesn't mind a visit from time to time to bend some parts much appreciated.

Does anyone know if the RAA has a bending brake in the Toronto region?.i was going to join anyway. Many EAA chapters have them so i was wondering.

I'm trying to avoid building a brake if possible.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

IMO, if you are serious about scratch building your plane, you are going to need a bending brake. You will need to access a brake for hundreds of parts and having to wait and save up parts to bend will significantly lengthen your build time. You can probably get by with a 4 foot brake from Princess Auto or Busy Bee Tools for the majority of your needs and then go elsewhere to access an 8 or 10 foot brake for those few parts.

You NEED your own brake if you are scratch building. Even if your next door neighbour has a brake, you will NEED your own...

Joe

Good Morning Michael,

If you want folks to give you their best honest opinion to your inquires, I would suggest you not criticize their responses.  If a response helps you, then a thank you would be nice.  If it doesn't, then I suggest silence.  Just my honest opinion.  I believe this is the first critical response I have seen to a reply and I have been on this discussion area for ten years.

I want to apologise for completely mis interpreting your response.. .you were offering good advise. I went to princess auto and just like you suggested they had a 40 inch bench top brake for $179 with 1 year full money back guarantee..

I responded too quickly and harshly. Im thankful for your input and hope to hear from you again if the opportunity allows.

I meant no disrespect and I am not trying to be a wet blanket but not having the right tools for the job at hand will greatly extend the time it takes to build your plane. Most fellow builders are more than willing to help but I think having to go over to their place will get old quickly for you (unless your patience level is much higher than mine...).

Good luck with your build.

Joe
