ok everyone, I’m about to commit to a Viking 110 engine for my 601 HD. So I’m wondering if anyone has had reliability issues. I’ve heard good things, but has anyone had problems, like getting parts, or support from Jan if needed? Has the cooling system worked well? Any fuel delivery problems with the injectors? Any electrical problems? How about mounting issues-is there ample information on how to mount? Etc, etc....
thanks all....

Thanks Norm, any idea what the total FWF weight is with that engine? And what propeller are you using if I may ask?
I'm guessing that the engine mount, cowling, prop and spinner adds maybe 20 lbs. I'm presently snowbirding in S Calif. from my home in Alaska, otherwise I could actually weigh the above items minus mount. The prop is a 3 blade Whirlwind. BTW, Loren Warner(in ANC) is about 50 miles from me and has the Viking 130 in the 750 he and his son will probably fly this summer. If you have any other questions and would rather email me, it is normneuls@yahoo.com
Thanks Norm, appreciate the info!
Scott....Ill be watching this thread closely as I am at the engine decision point with my 701. Rotax is OK, but $$$$ and overhauls and parts are monopolized. I like the good ole' O-200 but weight can be an issue. , Ive also looked at Aeromotion as an option (based upon the Subaru engine)....
Hi Jim,
the rotax is prohibitively expensive, its ridiculous. I’m hoping increased competition forces their prices down since the 601 HD requires such a light engine to maintain a reasonable useful load. Still, I really like the Viking 110 despite its 70 pound disadvantage over the 912. I’ll just have to keep really thin, like a horse jockey!
Do you know what the max FWF weight is for the 701? I can’t imagine it would be a whole lot. The 601 HD calls for no more than 265 pounds. With the 110 that leaves only 65 pounds for fluids, spinner, prop etc,
Scott, the Rotax 582UL Engine may just be what you need.
Hi Loren, thats an awfully cute little engine. I bet it sounds like a honey bee! Right price and weight though.
If Viking has a 110 available, I'd seriously look at that, but this Rotax 582 may be a great alternative. Lots of options. Different gear reduction available or direct drive, and can burn AVGAS or MOGAS. Rotax 2 cycle likely very reliable.
I just cant see putting a 65 hp engine in there. I was looking around in the photo gallery and there are 601 HD’s supposedly with o-235 engines, which weigh some 250 pounds! I cant figure that one out...
If 80hp would suffice, this appears to be another option http://www.aeroconversions.com/products/aerovee/index.html
Yeah, this kit looks interesting, maybe I could put some corvette aftermarket pick-me-ups in it, soup it up a bit!
