Online Community of Zenith Builders and Flyers
HI, All;
I'd prefer to *not* hang my wings from my garage ceiling, so I was thinking about storing them in a pole barn on my property. No door, dirt floor, just galvanized panels on telephone pole type posts.
I know I should no hermetically seal the wing with plastic wrap, but I'd like to protect as much as possible. There's all types of vermin that could get in there.
I was thinking about using stretch film on each end to keep the mud daubers out, and would seal the opening around the strut fitting (Cruzer), but otherwise let it breath. There will be a tremendous amount of dust / surface dirt that will accumulate, but I'm concerned a HarborFreight-type tarp would trap condensation, even if it's just draped over the top. (that happens 2-3x/year with my tarped lawn tractor).
I was also thinking that I'd fab-up some type of saw horse arrangement out of wood or PVC at least 5' wide on which to set the wing.
Has anyone had anything nasty happen to their wing if you stored in an open environement?
Thanks for your thoughts;

I stored my 701 wings on a couple of cradles with hinges and gas shocks that pivot up into the ceiling of a garden shed. They have been their for 3 or 4 years. Pictures are on "my plane" site photos DSC-5166 and 5165. You might be best off to build some boxes out of 1/4 plywood with vents/screens that will keep birds and spiders out and haul them up into the rafters of your pole barn on pulleys.
Well, I decided upon a solution. It's not optimal, but I built an EAA-standard wing rack. I thought I would not have room for a car, the rack, and the 12' workbench, but I do. Barely. Within inches. At least my wings are accessible for checking or for tasks like adding the wingtips, etc.
You could use an plastic wrap, just make sure you place a large desiccant container inside the plastic, this will absorb any water inside the sealed space in the plastic and your should be ok. This is the type of canister used to keep RV's dry over the winter storage. You can cook it to recharge it, and re-use it again and again.

Thanks for the suggestion and product recommendation. I'll get some, even though I'll have it in the garage.
I put mine on the EAA rack, wrapped in Vinyl boat shrink material, put the dedicate can in each one and sealed. Keeps the mud robbers and bird nests out.
