Good Morning Jim,
Thanks for passing this along. It looks like my engine is outside the affected engines.
Perry
Sadly my engine is affected, and has only been in service 17 months since new. So that’s $300 just for floats next July at my 12 month condition inspection, or sooner if it starts running rough. That’s two SBs now on my engine, both related to the Bing carbs...
Hi Jim,
I was rewatching Lockwoods video on the Rotax series of engines, in that video it appears as though Bing was not interested in improving the design, so Rotax went ahead and started testing float batches, accepting some and rejecting others. Seems like a strange arrangement.
Thanks Perry. I suppose Rotax has more at stake than Bing, who is possibly not enthusiastic about being in the aviation business, it’s a small market and too much litigation risk when something goes wrong...
Change them as soon as you receive them. I went out to preflight my 912UL with just over a year in service, and fuel was dripping out of one of the carbs. I happened to have just received the new floats so I replaced the ones that came in the factory new engine built in late 2018. Both sets were overweight, and the set on the leaking carb side were sunk at the bottom of the carb bowl when I removed it. They weighed 8.11 grams. The other carb was not leaking, and the floats were actually floating, but they were 0.56 grams overweight. May have been interesting if those floats had sunk to the bottom during my last flight.
Had rough running after landing and low RPMs. Could throttle up and would clear up and run smooth again, ran perfect at all other times Started doing the annual and weighed the floats, 5.63, 5.17, 4.81, 3.34. 3 heavy floats yikes. Bought the Marvel Schebler epoxy floats and ran like a top. These are supposed to never absorb fuel, are not hollow?, and have been around on all their carbs for some time. supposively can drill a hole in them and still float, yea..Super cheap only $358 for the set of 4!!!!, at ACS, rotax would have been more. Unfortunately, Rotax hasn't come up with a bulletproof design like Marvel has, so check these out. Ran perfect and seemed to have more power, Don't know how, but seemed to perform better, probably getting more fuel due to heavy floats before? Hope this helps someone with similar problem.
