I currently have an Aero-Classic oil cooler installed on my 350is. I replaced the factory oil cooler prior to first flight. The factory cooler had been installed by the original builder with the openings on the bottom of the cooler. I used the same connections with the new cooler. I now would like to flip the cooler so that the openings are on top (like the factory recommends). I am wondering who has their cooler installed this way and how did you run the hoses from the oil filter housing to the cooler? Also hose length recommendations would be greatly appreciated...

hi scott,

Just curious, why have the openings on the top?, what’ s the benefit?

It is what the company recommends and it is supposed to reduce the possibility of an air pocket in the cooler. I also want more clearance between the bottom of the cooler and the bottom cowl.

Scott,

Cannot help provide the information you requested but I can, perhaps, provide some good news. I changed oil coolers over a hundred hours ago and have not had an issue with over heating the oil since. If air bubbles develop they obliviously do not cause heat issues which is what the oil cooler is there to prevent. I used low profile fittings and did not have any clearance issues. My mount does not utilize the the stock rubber shocks which saves some clearance. My oil cooler is tilted back slightly to match the oil pan profile which helps with clearance.

Ralph

Thanks for the input.  I have an aero classic and live in Florida.  I have not had any issues with overheating but since it is thicker than the UL cooler fitment is a challenge and I have noticed the connections on the bottom weep oil over time. Hoping that moving them up top will reduce this...
