Has anybody had success with installing a Tannis engine preheating system on a UL-350 series engine?  I don't see kits that is specific for the ULPower engines on Tannis website.

Tim, this is what I have started to use in conjunction with a insulated cover.  Seemed to work well, but my season was cut short in January last winter with an engine issue so I didn't get to fully assess overall. HTH...Dave

I'm talking to Tanis about being the first article for their pre-heating system.   They now use a screw/bolt in either the rocker arm cover or intake manifolds to heat the cylinders.  The rocker arm covers use a M5x16 screw, and the intake manifold uses M6x16.    They currently have a M6x28 heating problem but this probably too long.

I just ordered my UL-350is today!

Sounds like a good option to have, keep us UL engine owners in the loop!

Friends,

I used the Reif system with cylinder heat bands and oil pan heat strips on our 350i.

I have been super pleased with its performance

No problems.. I urge you to check it out. I believe you will be pleased..

I shipped my UL-350is from Zenith directly to Tanis Aircraft Products.  It has arrived!

Alright!  That will be a great option to have available when they fit their system to the engine.  Please post a few details and pics when back in the workshop.

It's going to be awhile before I get my engine back from Tanis.  They need to manufacture a new size/length of heater element for the cylinder head heater probes.  The intact manifold bolts won't work, so it's either the bolt holes for the baffles and/or the rocker arm covers.  I'll have another update in January. : - (    Darn metric sizes.

The new cylinder head heating elements are in.  They are installed in the cylinder head ram air box mounting holes.  These holes are 20mm deep but only threaded 15mm deep at when the engine is built. The factory suggested threading the holes to 18mm deep to accommodate the 16mm heating elements.   The Tanis measured a 50 degree temperature rise after two hours.  The next test is to put oil in the sump and measure the temperature rise with oil.

It's winter here in Minnesota.  I hope they give it a good cold soak test too.

Hi Tim, when you say "The factory"  are you referring to ULPower or Tanis?  If ULPower was aware and approve, they may make a change to their manufacturing process and thread to 18mm depth.  That would be a good thing for us cold weather flyers.  Here in Maine, we recently had two nights of below zero temps When I got to my hangar mid morning to go fly, my heating "system" (insulated engine cover / Hornet Heater plugged in continuously) was maintaining oil temp in the mid 50's F and cylinder heads in the range of  55-75 F.  Not sure how my setup would work out on the ramp with lower temps...  Keep us updated on how well it performs please!

Dave

Tanis has been in contact with the UL Power engineers in Belgium.  The factory == UL Power.

Sounds like everyone is working together...thanks!  Will be a great option for UL owners in cold climate areas.

My engine arrived today after spending some time at Tanis Aircraft Products. Here's a couple of photos of the engine preheat system.   The airbox bolts heat the heat the cylinder heads, and a 40 watt pad heats the oil pan.
