Hi all!  My Dad was building an engine as a first step to building a plane as he wanted to get back into flying in retirement.  Alzheimers had other plans.  He got everything machined, and started assembly, and it stopped there.  He's in NE Indiana.

The one thing he had going for him is that he has always been an dedicated note taker.  If you're in the area and would be interested in finishing this up, my dad would love to see it meet the air, and my mom would love to see it gone, with the realization they won't get from it (money-wise) what my dad has spent on it.

As far as my dad's mechanical aptitude: He's rebuilt everything his whole life, and has rebuilt many straight-4 Fords, a Mopar slant-6, 318 V-8, lawn mower engines, etc.  He has machined his own gears to keep my mom's food-processor going for a decade longer than she wanted to own the thing.  So he had the gift.

My mom isn't tech savvy, so I'm the intermediary.  I'm working on getting pictures, parts, specs, and all of that for the work that was done, but I'm in TX, not IN.  In the meantime, if you're close (or flying by - they live near the DeKalb County airport, Auburn, IN) and want to talk airplanes/engines with my dad, he'd love that, and can walk you through his notebook of what he did.  But know that any for-real pricing needs to go through me or my mom, as my dad (depending on his mood) may not be realistic is pricing (and his price may change during a single conversation).  And send me all queries, we'll get a conversation going.  I'm having to educate myself on what specifications are important when it comes to using Chevy's Corvair motor for an aircraft.  My email is jon.e.kruger@gmail.com

I talked with my mom, and that's agreeable.  She's afraid the shipping you find would be really expensive, though.  Unless you've got connections.

Jon, can you provide your zip code so I can try to get some quotes? I may just have it sent to my address in Elgin , Illinois

Has the engine sold?

Did it sale?

It has not yet sold.

Do you know the size of the bore and what kind of pistons are in it? Does it have the extra bearing added onto the crank? I am looking to build one for the plane I am building but would like more info if you have it. Please contact me by email. lct17@mail.com

Larry,

Look a the photos, it has a 5th bearing if that's what you mean by the "extra bearing added to the crank".

I am wanting to build a 120hp engine for the Zenith 750 I going building. Not sure how much of your engine I can actually use but at least I can use the case and maybe the crank if it the correct one I know the pistons are not correct for my application but I am willing to give 500.00 for it. I will drive from Tn to the IN to pick it up which is over a 7 hour drive one way. With all things concidered that is about all I can do. If you are willing to take my price I will give the money to your mother when I pick it up or send it to you. I can pick it up next week baring any problems. I hate to offer this low and understand if you don’t want to take my offer as you may wait and get more for it it. Please let me know asap so I can make plans. Thanks

What price are you willing to take If I go and pick it up?

I have waited for over a week for a answer to my question as what it would take to purchase this engine with no results. I have a engine for a 64 convertible that I own that I can use but would like to save it for my car. But I want to get started and am getting impatient so please answer my question. If I don't hear from you in a couple of days I will give up on trying to buy this engine.

So the engine isn't sold yet,  but I've also gotten some good education from all of the interested parties about what data I'm missing in this post to really make it a worthwhile post to y'all.  I'm going to be looking to find someone that can get that data for me, and will post it as soon as I can get it.

The people on this page (at least those that I've interacted with) rock!

Jon,

How is your dad doing? I grew up in Ft Wayne.
Greyhound used to be a bit of a hassle but a cheap way to ship oversized freight. Not sure if they still do but may be worth asking them, it might help a potential buyer.
You stay strong.
