I am 62 yr. old and work construction as a safety tech, sometimes I have to travel a lot. Got my PPL in 1974 but haven't flown in some time. I'm doing a lot of head scratching but I really like building from plans only. There is so much help out there and I feel I can ask any dumb question I need to. Hope to have a build site up soon. My start date was about April, 2009.

Oshkosh

Posted on July 11, 2011 at 1:55pm 3 Comments

A friend and I are flying commercial to Oshkosh, well, we will be landing in Green Bay, GRB. Our flight is schedualed to land at 3:31 pm and we will take a shuttle to Airventure. If there is anyone willing to share a ride or give us a ride let me know, Other wise we will hire the shuttle and if anyone needs a ride they can hop on board.

Thanks,

Bob

Polishing

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 7:06pm 3 Comments

While waiting for some extra hands to stow my left wing I decided to polish a section. After cleaning it with mineral spirits I went over it with Nuvite F9 and it REALLY brought out some hand prints that I didn't see before. I went over it again with F9 and the prints are still there. Anybody got a solution.

Solid Rivets

Posted on December 13, 2009 at 9:48pm 4 Comments

Got my buddy Jamie over today to help with the solid rivets on the elevator trailing edge. I thought they were going to be hard to do but not so. It was pretty easy with the both of us, I held everything in place, straight and level and Jamie whacked the rivet setting tool with a 2 lb. ball peen hammer and it worked just fine. I even drilled one out and that was a piece of cake too. I only have one question. I accidently drilled three holes 1/8" instead of 3/32", how much should I cut off of a… Continue

Wing spar webs

Posted on July 30, 2009 at 10:02pm 3 Comments

Got brave today and cut the wing spar webs. After I come up with some kind of Rube Goldburg contraption to hold everything flat and secure, I'll use the fly cutter to cut the .95 mm holes. Debating on how to do the spar rivets, buy a rivet squeezer or build the rivet setter. Any suggestions?

The lexan was heated at the point of the bubble and air pressure was added from the back with a ring the shape of the bubble holding down the front. We made 5 bad ones before we got it to work.

Bob, I used HTS-2000 Minimum order is $80 with shipping, but should last me a few years.

I am having warping problems brazing thin aluminum. I think the soda can works since it's shape provides strength. Nevertheless, it is a handy tool. Welding/brazing thin aluminum is a challenge.

Hi Bob,

I started my 701 one week before my, now, ex wife told me she was pregnant with my, now, four year old. A lot of life has happened since then and my project only got as far as the rudder. I have joint custody of my two girls, 9 and 4. With work and a girlfriend I have very little spare time but that dream has never faded. I think I am going to switch to the 750 for the added cruise speed and engine choices. I would love to visit you sometime to check out your 701 and get some more motivation. I loved building the rudder. I have collected tools, information and other resources, just need a shop and some commitment.

If you need a full size copy of the nose rib drawing, tell me of a convenient place to send postal mail or photo file to you.

I was in my flight training program in Pensacola, FL, in 71-72. "Y'all" was new to me then. But it was one of the nicer words, especially when used by sweet and kind people there, young or old.
