What are the signs of failure for the stock fuel pumps?

Engine shuts off. Thats why you have a back up.

Also no fuel pressure
Run an ohms meter on it or on test bench it.

Different failure modes. Impeller failure will result in a change in the sound and or lower discharge pressure. Bearing structure failure will usually cause a change in sound but may not see a pressure drop.

Electrical failures are usually accompanied by changes in pressure over time or sudden. More often they just stop working.
