HiHo,

A new problem occurred these days.

The starter motor turns freely (powerfully), but the gear does not engage? The battery is new and fully charged (because I initially thought it was old and weak). I removed the starter and cleaned the gearbox (pictures). Everything moves easily and nothing is stuck. Nevertheless, the small gear does not engage when starting. Ah and it is worse when cold. If the gear catches sometimes the starter turns and start easily the engine. I don't understand. There are no broken teeth or anything bent, no sticky oil. Everything moves properly when disassembled. What could it be? Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you all.

OK, I can change the solenoid because it is >10 years old and it is a cheap option.

I can disassemble the elektro motor an clean it too ...

If this won't work a new elektro motor might be needed.

What is the correct part nr.? It's a Japan denso starter with 1.6kw ....

Steffen,

You don't need a new solenoid if the starter turns when energized.  What you need is a new Bendix gear clutch - they can fail completely or become intermittent.  Jabiru starters are "pattern parts" or copies/clones of OEM parts.  It's been my experience that the starter motor works fine, but eventually the Bendix clutch quits engaging. I went through 2 Bendix clutches from Jabiru and then got a genuine Honda Marine Bendix Clutch # 31207-ZE3-003 and had zero problems ever since.  The Honda part is much better constructed and is a direct replacement - no modifications necessary.  Ironically, when I bought mine, it didn't cost any more than the replacement part from Jabiru.  But do NOT buy a cheap pattern part - get the genuine Honda part and you'll never have another problem!
