Cliff,

Im building a 701 and have been told you used one of Rotax Rick's 670 Engines in your aircraft.   Any insight would be appreciated.   Thanks   Jim Cates

When you did your beanie, did yo add a center roof support of any kind, or did you just add the airfoil side and cover it?

Cliff,  Thanks for the response.  I like the building too.  I worked many years in a Fly Baby that was ready for cover when Hurricane Katrina took it (and most of New Orleans).  We could not find any of the bird.  I figure it's somewhere in the Gulf.  I completed a MiniMAX 1103 ultra-light in 2009 when I retired and moved to TX. Mostly too windy for flying it here.

The 701 is my 1st shot at all metal.  I took the EAA Sheet Metal Workshop then did the Ruddder Build Workshop at Zenith and told myself I could do it and ordered a complete kit (with folding wing option).  I picked it up myself on 19 Jan.

I'll probably drop you an note now and then ... You should do an 801 on floats ... It would sell real quick ...

Hi Cliff
I flew my 701 with a new blue head Rotax for last 6 years, it flew well
A bit under powered.I had a 68"three blade WarpDrive prop.C box 2.62.1
3.1 would be better, cruise about 55knts best rate of climb 50knts.
I found it was a bit hungry because of the GBox ratio and with two up
Had to rev. It more,it got off the ground ok climb around 500ft per
Min.single two up a bit less.
Empty weight 617lbs all up full tanks(fuse& older style wing tanks
919lbs.2 up full tanks 1089lbs,I'm changing to 80hp 912 it'll go
better,I would trade your engine on Rotax Ricks 670 but I was quite
Happy with performance one up.
Hope this helps.
Regards Gavin Waite

Couple of test flights Vids!

Posted on October 21, 2016 at 9:30am 0 Comments

Below are two test flights of N2701 (a Zenith CH 701). Each is about an hour long. One is a series of take offs and landings in the pattern and the other is a single flight testing performance of a shortened IVO prop. The Zenith is powered by a Rotax 582 with 20 gallon fuel capacity. Being so long, both vids are pretty boring, but clicking back and forth to interesting parts is worth the trouble.…

FAA inspection was today 5/28/2015 and N2701 now has an Airworthiness Certificate

Posted on May 28, 2015 at 8:32pm 8 Comments

Today was a culmination of 3 years work.  I received the project partially built from a fellow in Canada.  He had done about half the work and I did the rest.  The inspectors from the FAA did a good thorough job.  I have had medical problems the past several years that are not going away so flying is not possible now.  My skills have eroded along with my health.  I haven't decided how to approach the Phase I flights if at all.  I know of a couple of pilots who are capable.  I plan to ask one…

Finished in the garage.

Posted on December 4, 2014 at 10:13am 1 Comment

I finally have finished all that can be completed here in my garage.  Soon, I will move all the parts to Sunrise Beach airport, Texas, for re-assembly and to get ready for the FAA airworthiness inspection.

Final Push to Finish

Posted on October 14, 2014 at 9:56am 0 Comments

I am in the final push to finishing.  I've procrastinated way too long through the hot summer.  The only airframe parts left to fabricate are the main wing root covers that will be done once the plane is reassembled at the airport.  I am looking forward to an engine start here at home, testing the radios and getting past the trailer trip to the airport.  Paint will have to wait until post Phase I and will probably be done by another owner.  I don't fly anymore since a 5-way bypass.  An…
