Installing Grove Brakes

Posted on January 14, 2010 at 7:54pm 4 Comments

Does anyone have any good photos/instructions for installing Groves brake assembly on 601/650 ? No instructions came with the brake set, and the ZAC photos suck ("put the brakes on here...").

CH 650 main gear legs

Posted on December 10, 2009 at 11:04am 4 Comments

I am kit building a CH 650. While waiting for the wing mods, I have decided to work on the main gear (easily set aside when I get the mods). The 650 plans call for the main gear legs to be installed with the "flat" side toward the front. However, the Zenith demo plane and the HomeBuiltHELP demo plane show the gear legs installed in reverse. Is there a reason for this? Is this an old design? Are others doing this for some reason, or should I just follow the plans?

601/650 Upgrade Mods

Posted on November 16, 2009 at 6:37pm 3 Comments

I am in the process of building a CH 650. I have completed the rudder, horiz stab, and flaps, with the ailerons clecoed only. I have been holding off starting the wings until these mods are released. I have tried to be optimistic and positive about the 601/650 situation, and mainly just monitoring these sites. However, I still see some individuals on this site, and others, sticking their heads in the sand, bragging about flying being dangerous, riding motorcycles without helmets, and running… Continue

Hi Jim, I am on your builders log site getting great inspiration! Where did you mount your electric fuel pump. Can't find it in the pictures. Thanks! Joe in Oshkosh

Hi Jim, After following Caleb's instructions to fit hoop to canopy and breaking hoop in two with using only hands I took the hoop that came with fuselage kit for the 601 canopy and just got help forcing canopy down until it fit the hoop.  Since cutting in two it is no longer an issue to put on.  The canopy is much more flexible than the aluminum.  It does take a memory after two years in storage in garage rolled up.  My near finished canopy does not fit as plans show but I believe it is acceptable.

My home airfield is at 6500ft. Within 20 minutes in any direction I can drop 3000 ft or all the way to sea level in one direction. That challenge caused me to want the mixture adjustment. It flys just like the plane I learned in with an 0-200. Grab the red know and tune the EGT. I installed an electric solenoid to prime it. It works sweet.

It takes a little fab work to get it all hooked up but I have the parts figured out if you want some help. I just bought a radial R2800 from Rotec for my other project so I bought a tbi for it too.

Jim,

My name is Dennis Hutchinson, I just sent a "friend request", but it only allowed 200 characters. I am a builder/owner/pilot of a CH601HD based at Mt. Comfort (KMQJ). I am also a friend of Dave Gardea based in Shelbyville (KGEZ). I would be willing to come out and take a look at your project, and maybe help you out with your nose gear issue. I believe that Dave would also like to see your project. You can call me at 498-6903.

Jim: Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but we were on vacation. The material I used is called EZ Cool Insulation by Harbour Supply (www.lobucrod.com). It is an automotive product. Sometimes you can find them on E-Bay and get it even cheaper. I put it on both sides of the firewall and inside the cockpit as fire protection and also sound protection. I used it in the 1st plane I built and was very happy with the results. Hope this was of some help. Shayne McDaniel CH650 N5880Z

Jim,

Thanks! I am waiting for my upgrade kit as well. Last word was that it was to ship by end of February. When I called them last week they told me it's now mid-March. I'll be working on my panel in the meantime. Regards, Dave

Jim, I think you are correct, but I posted a blog to make sure we thought alike, for the moment.

Hi Jim, yep I have ordered the upgrade kit. Recently I had cut my 12 foot bench in half to make more room. Now I need to add those 6 feet back on to work on the wings again. I had even thinking about getting a hangar in the Spring, but this upgrade may delay that.

Regards,

Dave
