Wing Repairs - Flap Surgery

Some of you remember Lydia, the young lady we found in a market last year with an arm contracture.  Well, a year on she has been busy building and maintaining aircraft and today is undergoing flap surgery to start the repairs to her right wing.

Before going to surgery our team of West African girls sent to the workshop for an oil change...…

A DASH TO THE FINISH

Hey guys thanks for the ideas.I think the fuel tanks in the wings is the best option but cleaning up under the dash helped and sealing at the top of the tank might make it better.

Next thing looking for a sticky backed material that looks like the wonderful finish you get on those dashes, Ya know the one Black bit bumpy to the touch just to make her look good till fall and the new SKYVEIW system can be installed

And Bob thank for letting me know about the front steering arm one…

A LITTLE SMELL OF GAS

My old 601 has the tank up under the dash and the plane always has that smell of fuel now there hasn't ever been aleak however keeping the canopy closed for a couple of weeks makes it pretty bad. Any one got a fix I know how to get rid of the smell but is there a way to seal up the tank area on the old ones so it won't come back

also anyone converted the older plane to wing tank

KEEPING IT ALIVE

I CAME HERE FOR HELP

I recently found and purchased a 601HDA that was in storage. despite a lack of paper work and NO ID plane I took on the project. After several weeks of searching I found the original owner. Mr Art Mitchell the original zenair Canada builder. I followed several leads and soon came up with the serial ID plate that had been removed many years ago after the plane was…

Elevator parts

Just spent a pleasant couple of hours down in the shed, making the elevator rear ribs (including a modified one for the side with the trim tab), and elevator rear channel.

Very glad I've got a wood heater in the shed - when I came back to the house I noticed the cars were iced over and the grass was considerably more crunchy than usual underfoot!

Didn't take the camera with me but will take some pics soon.  I'll take the elevator spar to a sheet metal worker up the road to have…

CH-750 POWER-OFF FULL-FLAP LANDING TECHNIQUE

I am not feeling comfortable doing power-off full-flap landings in the "Z" Bird. I look forward to hearing from those who have perfected the technique.  Approach speed? Over the numbers? Wind correction? Tips? Please, share your experience!

Shipping issues

My fuselage and finishing kits arrived yesterday by truck in a large crate.  I talked to the shipping company that morning and asked if I needed anything at my end to offload the crate.  They said the driver would have everything that's needed.  Wrong!

The driver's first question when he arrived was "do you have a forklift?".  Because the crate was 10+ feet long, his pallet jack would only lift one end and he didn't think he'd be able to turn it to get it on the power lift on…

Live Construction of 750 on UStream

To give my distant grandchildren something to watch (I'm no threat to Big Bird) my shop/hangar is now visible on ustream.com.  Just do a search for Zenith 750 to find my channel.  BTW, I turn the audio off when not specifically broadcasting to my kids......Steve

Back from Tailless, N200BE

As I reported last January, N200BE was struck from the rear by a biplane during rollout after landing.  As you can see the tail of the Zodiac was chewed off by the biplane's prop.  You can read all about the accident on the FAA's accident website (01/29/2011).  What I wish to report is that as of 16 May, the little silver 601XL-B is airworthy again.   Thanks to Hampton Aviation in Mena, Arkanas, the tail of N200BE has been repaired.…

CH-750 Fuel Issue

I recently bought a CH-750 in Oklahome and did all my local flying there, resulting in flight durations of two hours or less. Finally it was time for an "extended" cross-country from Cushing OK (CUH) to my home,Rockport TX (RKP). During the flight I found that I had essentially no fuel flow from the right-hand tank. The engine also quit a couple of times. I have reversed fuel tank caps to see if the problem reversed. With only half-full tanks it appeared the problem just went away. However,…

Inspired!

Currently on holiday in Bendigo (Vic, Australia) so dropped in to Bendigo Airport where Allan Barton has his beautiful 750 and 601.  Allan very kindly took me up for a flight in his 750, which has inspired me to redouble my efforts on my scratch-built 701.

The plane flew beautifully, especially impressed with the digital instrumentation and "professional" extras such as carby heat, boost etc.

The aircraft is surprisingly roomy with the bubble doors, which I'll be getting too. …

Streamlined Strut Covers

Finished my streamlined strut covers yesterday.  Didn't really see much top end performance increase, maybe 1 MPH.  Slow speed handling is much happier though.  Stall speed is down and the plane happily climbs at 30 MPH now where before it got a little mushy at about 40 before.

I have the 80 HP Rotax 912 UL, 70 inch Warp Drive 3 blade with nickle leading edges set to about 8 deg.  This combination gives me 78 MPH cruising at 5200, 5400 RPM on full power climbout and a top end…

Hand Pump Floats or Electric Pump

When you order Zenith amphibian floats you have to chose between operating your retractable wheels either by a hand pump or electric pump. Zenith does not price either pump differently...but if you want a hand pump to back up the electric version its an additional $1000. The hand pump must be mounted between the pilots legs so it can be operated by the pilot. The electric pump can be mounted in the rear and operated with a single switch. Both pumps weigh the same. Do any of the builders have… Continue
