Zenith 750 Cruzer, the kit arrived

May 10 2023

The kit arrived. I orderer the full kit and a delivery. It was the right decision. The kit is so big I doubt I would be able to handle it myself. The track driver had a nice electrically driven forklift.…

Zenith 750 Cruzer, building the workbench

March 27 2023

It is my first plane build. I do not know what is good and what is bad.

I do not know in advance which workbench I will like the most.

I decided instead of making the ultimate workbench to build a workbench which is just good enough to start building.

When I have more experience I can rebuild my cheap workbench for something more suitable.

Or keep it. Or upgrade it. I am building a simple workbench similar to what I saw in the Zenith…

750 STOL MUD FLAP

Took John Austin's mud flap idea and put it on my 750STOL. I have a Viking 130 engine which has the belly radiator which was collecting a bunch of mud during the fall. I cannot attest to the mud prevention as of yet, but so far all flight testing looks solid.…

Do I need washers when using Self Locking Nylon Nuts?

Hi I am building my 650B and about to bolt in the Aileron Balance Bars the drawing 6W-12 lists 3 Bolts (an3-11A ) and 3 Nylon Self Locking Nuts (an365-1032) there is no mention of any washers. Are they needed - or not?

2" Square Tube

I see people using 2" square tube in support of building these planes. How many pieces and how long should I buy to construct a 650? Hopefully my kit will arrive within a month. Thanks.

Reinstalling the Wing Root Skins on a 701

Although several years ago, I recollect that the wing root skins when clecoed to the uninstalled wings looked pretty smooth and unbuckled,  a tough job but nicely executed.

Now as I try to install the wing root skins w the wings on the plane,  trimming to clear the skylight per the plans and manual. It seems no matter which way I start clecoing them on, I cannot get away from having a stressed, buckled wrinkled mess (and thats just me). I keep coming back to: Am I sure this is…

601 XLB - top rudder hinge rivets loose.

601-XLB - 600 hrs - top rudder hinge rivets loose. Noticed a bit of play lately - barely noticeable by pushing up on the bottom of the rudder at the tip. I thought it was a bit of wear at the hinge bolt. It seemed much worse today. Just took a closer look and the rivets holding the top hinge to the rudder are loose - noticeable movement between the two.  Red X - Code 3 - Grounded.

So now the rudder needs to come off - I think.  Wondering if I can replace the rivets without…

Vertical fin complete

I suppose I should start posting some updates on my blog.

Last November I ordered the vertical fin.  I've been saving up for the tail kit, but I got a little impatient and wanted to practice my skills from the rudder workshop in September.  The fin is normally part of the fuselage kit, but there is no reason it can't be ordered and assembled after the rudder.…
