First flight

I had been waiting for the wind to go down for two weeks. I finally had an evening where I felt it was low enough to do the test ride. It flew out with plenty of climb. It ran a little too cool and the left wing felt a little heavy. The trim worked. I got up to 120KTS while in the pattern, so I slowed it down and did some pattern work after I got higher.
I nailed the landing. She is a good flier.

Looking for builders that have used the Viking engine.

I have ordered a new viking engine for my 601XL and m interested in talking with anyone that has already done that.

My motor and related paarts are not here yet, but I do have a couple of installation questions.

If anyone will talk to me about their installation, please let me know

BBQ at Sun-N-Fun

I am planning to come to the Picknick at Lakeland. I will be bringing a friend again this year.

O235 experiences

I have an O235L2C in my 601XL.

It has E-Mag ignitions, an Ellison throttle body, a Warp drive three bladed prop, and a remote oil filter. There nis one electric fuel pump, and one mechanical.

I would like to hear from anyone else that has a similar set up.

I have flown the airplane, but not often. I had it inspected by the FAA for certification about the time that the NTSB sent the letter squaking about the airplane being unsafe. I flew it anyway, but was not comfortable with it.… Continue

Update kit

I am ready to start with the update kit.

When the FAA came around to do the final inspection for its airworthyness, the inspector for the FSDO gave me a copy of the NTSB article about the accidents. I had just come back from Sun and Fun where everyone was dissing my airplane. I was nervous enough that I didn't trust it.

I got so nervous about the safety of my little airplane that I have not flown it very much. I have been waiting to have the other shoe fall.

It has fallen, and I… Continue

It is flying

Add my 601XL to the list of those flying.
It is N6ZK
It took off for the first time yesterday evening.
It flew as advertised.
The O235 seems to be a good engine for this airplane.
Everything stayed in the green
Stalls were at 46 mph.

It is inspected and ready to fly

After two years and one month N6ZK, my 601XL is ready to fly.
The FAA inspected it this morning and we both left happy.
It has been a good two years. The kit was really straightforward to build.
I'll send pictures the day that I fly it.
It looks like next week. It has a Lycoming 0235 with an electronic ignition, and an Ellison throttle body.
It has not been painted yet, and will not be until I have had a chance to fly it during the warm weather.

Finally got to taxi it

After nearly two years of building, I got the engine running, and taxied it around the airport. Pretty exciting. I am about ready to have the FAA bless it.

Ride prior to test flight

I live in PA, near Erie.

I am going to finish my 601XL in the next few weeks, and am looking for someone that has a flying 601XL that will give me a ride so I can get a little stick time before I take this thing for its first flight. I have over 1200 hours logged and am current. I have been flying a CUB for the last few years, but have flown many different airplanes, and am capable of flying a complex airplane.

If there is anyone out there that will let me go with them for an hour or… Continue
